At Dr Clown, the relevance of a program for a particular facility depends largely on the following four criteria:

1. The quality of the relationship between patients and clowns.
2. The broader effect of the program on family, friends, and staff.
3. The degree to which the therapeutic clown approach complements pre-existing resources.
4. The staff’s acceptance of the artists’ involvement in educational and treatment programs.

Our programs

We presently offer a program for children, with sessions twice a week, and another for adults, with one half-day session a week.  Both programs run for 48 weeks a year.

Adult program

For our adult clientele, we have been offering three-hour clown duo visits since 2000, usually on Wednesdays. The programs last 48 weeks, for a total cost of $12,000.00 per year.  Taxes and travelling expenses may be added.   Each visit generally benefits 15 to 40 patients, from one or several departments, as well as their family and friends and the hospital staff.

A six-month pilot program (including a program assessment at the end of the fourth month) is undoubtedly a key element of our services, since it determines the appropriateness of implementing them for a longer period of time.

Our adult programs are presently meeting with success at the CHSLD Résidence Paul-Lizotte (residential and long-term care centre), L'institue universitaire de gériatrie de Montréal (rehabilitation centre), and the Jewish General Hospital.  Contact information for our liaisons in these facilities, and program assessments are available on request.

We will be happy to meet with care or administrative personnel from your facility.  A DVD or PowerPoint® presentation of our services will help you see for yourselves the benefits that our program can bring to your establishment.

Procedure

1. Preliminary meeting.
2. Designation of a sponsor.
3. Adjustment of needs and structures for both parties.
4. Signing of a letter of intent.
5. Development of a pre- and post-program assessment process.
6. Training by the establishment for artists on the particular aspects of the targeted department.
7. Distribution of the first anonymous questionnaire to the staff by Dr Clown, in order to assess staff fears and expectations.
8. Information sessions for facility staff to explain Dr Clown’s approach and relieve any apprehensions they may have.
9. Signing of the proposal and start of a six-month pilot program.
10. Second Dr Clown questionnaire – after four months of service – in order to improve our performance and collaboration with staff.
11. End-of-project assessment in which all parties participate: patients, family, staff, artists, and sponsors.
12. Extension of the program for a further six months, if everyone is satisfied.  The contract can then be renewed annually.
